Overview
Akrasia is sometimes translated as a lack of self-control, but it specifically is used in a situation where one intentionally acts against their own judgment. In active addiction, for example, someone may have complete understanding of all the consequences of using a substance again and have a sincere desire not to, but a craving might be so overwhelming that they give in.
Those like Socrates via Plato argued that people acting against their own interest is the result of ignorance as they necessarily choose whatever feels like the best choice. Aristotle instead believed internal conflict in people could explain seemingly contradictory facts, like knowing something is bad for you but doing it anyways.
