Overview

Anxious attachment is a type of attachment style in developmental and relational psychology that’s characterized by deep fears of rejection or abandonment. This can result in seeking constant validation or reassurance in the desire for close intimacy, observed through overthinking, people-pleasing, low self-esteem, and “clingy” behaviors. Anxious attachment styles are often thought to develop out of inconsistent or unpredictable attitudes from caregivers in childhood. Children who observe sudden swings between warm and cold treatment from their parents or guardians can end up insecure in their attachments without constant temperature checks.
