Overview

Avoidance in a psychological context is a coping mechanism where someone either acts or fails to act in a way that evades an unwanted experience. In the short-term, this serves as a coping mechanism that provides immediate relief in response to a distressing encounter, but in the long-term, this can end up reinforcing avoidance as a reaction instead of addressing the roots of triggers.
