Overview
Avoidant attachment refers to a style of attachment that’s characterized by hyper-independence when encountering stress or the prospect of emotional intimacy. Historically, under conventional attachment theory frameworks, the avoidant attachment style is thought to emerge from a pattern of neglect or rejection from caregivers in response to a child’s needs, leading the child to believe they must handle their difficulties themselves in order to maintain a relationship.
