Overview

Bed sores are injuries to the skin and underlying tissue that result from being stationary in a single position for a long period of time. The constant weight applied to a single area can constrict blood flow, and certain postures can lead to skin and bones being slid in opposite directions. In extreme cases, it can lead to deep sores and wounds that expose muscle, tendons, and/or bone. This can be seen in some people with substance use disorders as heavy intoxication or compulsive processes like gaming lead to fixed positions for hours or even days. Other conditions like severe depressive withdrawal can also lead to someone lying in bed for similar lengths of time. Malnutrition and substances that constrict blood vessels can increase the risk of developing sores as well.
