Overview

Blood alcohol concentration (BAC) measures the amount of alcohol someone has consumed by testing the weight-to-volume ratio within their body’s bloodstream. 0.08 grams per 100 milliliters, or 0.08%, is generally the legal limit for driving in the United States, which is reached on average after 4 standard drinks defined as 14 grams of pure alcohol, though of course this varies enormously by each individual’s unique body composition. Body mass can make a huge difference, as well as biological sex since women generally have lower levels of enzymes to process alcohol than men of similar body mass.
