Overview

Despite boredom being a universal experience that extends even beyond humans to other species, researchers and clinicians have historically neglected to create a consensus around its definition. In 2012, John Eastwood was part of a team that proposed a framework in a journal called Perspectives on Psychological Science:

“…boredom is best described in terms of attention. A bored person doesn’t just have nothing to do. He or she wants to be stimulated, but is unable, for whatever reason, to connect with his or her environment - a state Eastwood describes as an ‘unengaged mind.‘”

The American Psychological Association references this paper in its online coverage of boredom as a concept [^0].
