Overview

Codependence refers to a relationship dynamic characterized by unhealthy reliance on each other. Even when one person might appear to be entirely dependent on another, financially, socially, interpersonally, etc., the other person may have a need to feel like they’re rescuing someone in order to feel secure. This doesn’t apply just to romantic or family dynamics either; friendships and professional relationships can also be characterized by codependence.

Codependence and substance use disorders have a bidirectional relationship. Someone with a substance use disorder can quickly become dependent on someone else to manage daily life as the consequences of chronic substance use interferes with their functioning. At the same time, someone in a codependent relationship who regularly experiences violations in their boundaries can end up using substances to cope.
