Overview

Drug Consumption Rooms (DCRs), also referred to as a supervised injection site or overdose prevention center (OPC), are facilities where someone can use substances they’ve obtained while under medical supervision as part of harm reduction policies. This allows the immediate administration of medications like naloxone (narcan) for opioid overdoses, access to social services like peer counseling and entry points into treatment programs, and amenities that those without hosuing lack like showers and refreshments. Some estimates show that 100 to 140 of these facilities are legally approved around the world. There is a solid body of evidence indicating that DCRs reduce public substance use, connect individuals to health and social services, and prevent drug overdoses, all without increasing local crime rates.
