In 1972, researchers at Washington University led by John Feighner proposed a set of diagnostic rules to be operationalized for psychologists and psychiatrists:

  1. Primary Affective Disorders, divided into depression and mania

  2. Seconday Affective Disorders, like depression resulting from another disorder or condition

  3. Schizophrenia

  4. Anxiety Neurosis

  5. Obsessive-Compulsive Neurosis

  6. Phobic Neurosis

  7. Hysteria

  8. Antisocial Personality Disorder

  9. Alcoholism

  10. Drug Dependence

  11. Mental Retardation

  12. Anorexia Nervosa

  13. Homosexuality

  14. Undiagnosed Psychiatric Illness, for when the other categories fail to describe someone’s condition or they don’t strictly meet the explicated criteria
