Overview

I-statements are expressions that avoid generalizing by focusing on personal experiences. For instance, rather than saying “a good parent is always attentive to their kids’ needs”, an I-statement might reframe the sentiment as “I feel like a good parent when I’m attentive to my kids’ needs.”

Commentary

No one ever actually does this anywhere. I don’t even consistently do it on this site. In fact, I’m about to break that principle right now: we as people have a strong tendency to want to share our information and experiences, which requires some degree of generalization that assumes we and another person are, to some extent, interchageable.
