Overview
Insanity is not a term used in the medical field due to its social stigma and lack of precision. Instead, it has legal weight by labeling a person as being in a state of mind in which they are incapable of understanding the consequences of their actions during a crime.
Contrary to popular wisdom, the definition of insanity is not actually doing the same thing over and over while expecting different results. That came out of a Narcotics Anonymous pamphlet in 1981 and has been misattributed to historically significant intellectuals like Albert Einstein, Mark Twain, and Benjamin Franklin.
