Overview

Isolation of affect is a psychological defense mechanism in which the cognitive and emotional components of an experience are isolated from each other so that an individual can cognitively engage with an idea without being conscious of their emotional associations with it. It’s considered to be the opposite of repression, where the emotional affect is impacting an individual but they don’t consciously recognize the idea.
