In the Rig Veda, soma refers to a sacred ritual drink offered to the gods. Consuming it was believed to grant divine vision, greater awareness of the universe, immense strength, and even immortality. Some researchers have proposed that soma historically might have referred to Amanita muscaria mushrooms, cannabis, ephedra, and other guesses involving flowers or herbs.
