Eubulus was a 4th century BCE Athenian poet to whom a fragment of a play is ascribed that we might call “The Ten Kraters of Eubulus.” The god Dionysus, associated with intoxication and transcendental experiences, outlined the progressive stages of drunkenness. It starts with love and pleasure, then shouting and violence, then engagement with law enforcement or other authorities, and finally some kind of physical sickness and mental madness. Dionysus advises drinkers to moderate and go home right as it begins to invoke feelings of sleepiness past love and pleasure.
