Summary

AA Agnostica was founded in 2011 by Roger Couvrette, an atheist AA member from the Greater Toronto Area.

The inspiration came from a controversy where We Agnostics and Beyond Belief, two secular AA groups, were removed from the GTA Intergroup’s meeting directory after the groups began using an alternative version of the Twelve Steps and Traditions. While documenting these events and the history of secularism in AA, Couvrette realized there was far more than he expected for an initial investigation. So came about the website. Generally, “agnostic” as a term is used to signal that you at least accept that no belief in God is required to work the Twelve Steps, without asserting a claim about God in general.

In 2015, Couvrette published Do Tell! Stories by Atheists and Agnostics in AA which documented stories from 15 men and women each about their gratitude for AA Agnostica. In 2017, Couvrette published A History of Agnostics in AA that compiled the research collected over the years.

Note: In April 2026, AA Agnostica announced they would no longer post new articles to their site after 14 years and 777 articles, though it remains up and accessible. The site had seemed to cease publishing new content in an early announcement in 2022 with 742 articles, but they seem to have restarted at some point before stopping again.

I would be doing a disservice if I did not credit this website for being an invaluable inspiration for what an independent knowledge base about recovery can look like.
