Berks Opera Company’s ‘Faust’ focuses on addiction (2015)

A take on Faust that has the titular character selling his soul to heroin rather than the Devil as a 21st century temptation. Whether intentional or not, this evokes the description of Faust as being “addicted” in The English Faust Book published in 1592, when “addict” was a newer term referring to the paradoxical choice of giving up one’s choice continually to something else, like sin.
