An interpreter for Shohei Ohtani, a Major League Baseball player, Ippei Mizuhara was convicted of bank fraud and tax evasion. Specifically, he admitted to stealing almost $17 million from Ohtani to pay off gambling debts. The bookie, Matthew Bowyer, said he recognized Mizuhara’s compulsive gambling habits. However, E. Martin Estrada, then U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California and prosecutor in Mizuhara’s case, claimed that gambling addiction alone couldn’t explain the extent of his actions and criminal opportunism had to be involved.
