Overview
Hepatotoxicity literally means liver toxicity. Specifically, it refers to the liver damage that might be caused by prescription medications, substance use, herbal supplements, and exposure to toxins. For the most common substances in disorders:
-
Cocaine overdoses can cut off oxygen and blood flow to cause sudden cell death in the liver
-
MDMA and methamphetamine can cause extremely high body temperatures and oxidative stress that injure the liver
-
Opioids rarely causes liver failure on their own, even if chronic use is related to cirrhosis in the long run, but injection drug use in general has a high chance of spreading viral infections that do directly attack the liver like Hepatitis C when needles or equipment are shared
